What Ping Results Mean
- Response received - The host is reachable and responding
- Response time (ms) - Lower is better. Under 50ms is excellent, over 200ms is noticeable lag
- Packet loss - Missing responses indicate network congestion or fault
- No response - Host is down, unreachable, or blocking ICMP traffic
Real World Scenarios
Your website feels slow. Ping your server - if latency is high, the problem might be between you and the server rather than the server itself. If ping fails entirely, the server could be down. After deploying a new website or server, ping it to confirm it's accessible from the internet.
Ping is also useful for testing VPN connections - ping an internal IP through the VPN to confirm the tunnel is working.
